RESET: A Reason for Recess

Whew, chile, what a time to be alive! I'm so grateful for the opportunity to soak in the sun and enjoy my early twenties. The past year of isolation and quarantine almost stole this experience from me, but GOD! Interestingly enough He’s taught me the importance of FUN in this season. God is fun. He has a sense of humor. He cracks jokes and cares about our joy. Sometimes, His jokes are even corny. We don’t call him Dad / ABBA for nothing. #ABBAJOKES

I have to laugh with God, because He’s turning me into a woman I didn’t know I had the potential to become. A woman who knows how to work hard and play hard--a new creation. The process of becoming resilient AND restful like Proverbs 31 is not easy. However, it’s worth it. Which reminds me of an encounter the prophet, Jeremiah, had with the LORD:

Jeremiah 18:1-6

18 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

When first reading that scripture, ABBA can seem a bit overbearing. Why must He “make… again another vessel, as seemed good to Him?” Yet, let’s try reframing our view of the LORD in this text. Instead of an unhealthy fear of God. Let’s look at it with a holy fear--or REVERENCE--for the LORD.

Imagine that God is The Coolest Dad who volunteers to supervise recess at school everyday. Sure, He has to wake us up early to be on time for school and discipline us from time to time, but He cares about our safety (in this hour) so much that He wants to be part of our recess. Some might call this recess a selah. For others it may be a sabbath. I’m calling it a reset. We’d all be correct.

So in honor of ABBA , summer time fun, and (the belated) Father’s Day, I’ve compiled a list of fun, recess-like activities.

1. Take a nap.

2. Read a book.

3. Journal

4. Soak in the sun.

5. Revisit a childhood hobby.

6. Dance around.

7. Enjoy God's company.
